8 Tips To Cope With Job Loss

In a recession, a lot of people will lose their jobs. If they have an Exponential Mindset, they’ll get another quickly, but during the transition, here are a few tips to make it easier to cope with one of the most stressful situations you’ll find yourself in. If you know someone who has lost his/her job, send them the link to this blog post and the previous one that explains 5 tips to get a job in recession.

Job Loss Coping Tip #1: Create a NEW routine

When you were working, you got up and went to work, you need to create a new routine. Don’t just sleep in. Get up and ‘do stuff’… If you read my previous blog post on Exponential Job Search Strategies, you have no time to sleep in, you’ve got stuff to do!!!!

Job Loss Coping Tip #2: Beware of addictions

Beware of drugs, alcohol and over-eating. When your self-esteem suffers, you’re more prone to negative addictions. Make sure you MONITOR this and don’t cross the line of abusive behaviour. Because once crossed, it’s a long hard road back. If you drink, smoke or eat too much, it’ll show at interviews. Employers don’t want to hire a liability… Think about it. You have two candidates to choose from. Are you going to pick the one with nicotine stained fingers, who’s 10 or 20 lbs or kgs overweight with blood shot eyes and red veins on his/her nose ( a tell tale sign of alcoholism) or the fit, vibrant, energetic and responsive candidate?

Job Loss Coping Tip #3: Exercise

Exercise is key to maintain your self-esteem. Now’s the best time to get fit and healthy – YOU HAVE THE TIME. You don’t have to join a gym, you can exercise with situps, push ups, power walking, jogging or cycling which are all FREE.

You can check with your local gym to see if they can accommodate your financial situation with a restricted membership that costs less…

Job Loss Coping Tip #4: Start A Hobby

Consider a creative pastime that occupies your mind and spirit. You deserve to use this time to recharge and rejuvenate. Academics do this – they call it taking a sabbatical. You’ve earned it. Start Stamp Collecting, Scrapbooking, or just get your family photos together and into an album.

Job Loss Coping Tip #5: Improve Or Learn A New Skill

Employers are looking for people with skills and aptitudes. Imagine if you learned to Speed Read and put that on your CV or resume… That impresses people more than you can imagine. What if you learned to solve a Rubik’s Cube? I’m serious. What if you brought the Marc-Ka-Ching Kube to your interview and let it be seen in your briefcase of purse?!?

Job Loss Coping Tip #6: Monitor Your Wellbeing And Sleep Pattern

Going to bed late and getting up late is a recipe for disaster. Even though you are not officially ‘working’, you need structure in your life and you need to monitor your pattern via an agenda/time sheet so you can identify any shifts that are happening. Avoid at all costs the midday nap that you otherwise would not take.

The key is to maintain a rhythm that energises you – not one that deflates and dissipates your enthusiasm and focus. Every once in a while – TAKE A DAY OFF. Take the kids out and enjoy your day!

Job Loss Coping Tip #7: Revitalise Your Relationships

Pay attention to the relationships in your life that are important. Get in touch with a long-lost friend of family member, not to beg for a job, but rekindle the friendship. You’ll both feel better and it’ll help you maintain your positive mindset. Don’t become a hermit because you’re unemployed.

Job Loss Coping Tip #8: Focus On The Present

Focus on the present – not the past or the future.

Why?

Because in the past you were WORKING and in the future you’re still unemployed UNTIL you get a job…

You need to focus on right here and now. Make the most of this opportunity to get a better job, change careers, do something new and exciting.

In my book, Get The Business Results With The Least Amount Of Effort, I explain how you can expand your circle of influence.

One easy way is to focus on what you want – not what you just lost. Your job’s gone. Get over it. This is a  chance to take a step forward into your NEW future.

Create your new destiny, right here, right now.

An Exponential Mindset will help you not only get another job, but create the career and lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of having… Take the time to read my blogs and website content… I would love to help you transform to become the person you’ve always known you could become!
