Understanding your clients is one thing, them understanding you is another! Something that we, at times, struggle with.
Loved the caption, so true.

The caption of the image made me laugh but it's the truth and really a serious matter when it comes to your clients. Understanding has a lot to do with the business, one of the most essential factor and I agree with your statement. Keeping records and great meetings will also do.

Understanding my clients is one of the most important aspects of what I do in custom designing and making handcrafted jewellery. My clients need me to be a great listener and expect to see that I have understood their unique and individual needs in having a bespoke piece of jewellery commissioned. Otherwise the whole thing goes pear shaped and if I get the design brief wrong there is no easy way to go back a few steps to right the wrong, its generally a matter of starting again which is costly...

On the flip side making sure I am understood by my suspects, prospects and client in my communications is even more important. I have a very specific target market and if I miss in my copy writing and communications then I end up attracting the wrong person which on top of costing me money for bad or ineffective copy cost me time that I could be spending with the right people.

As you said above it all comes down to the art and science of clear communication.

Finally someone has realised that this jargon actually makes you sick! People boring you with trying to be important with words that do not impress. If they get down to business and stop all this BS they would save themselves a lot of time and probably be better understood and liked.

Shame on you politicians, come out with the right words and mean business... Stop wasting my time and our money...

Hi Farida,

I'm glad you re-read my study book. You are correct - every time you re-read a book like this one, it can be new because what you you didn't know previously, you now know and therefore something else comes to the forefront.

As for the principles, mine come from several sources. I created a Words Of Wisdom booklet.

Cheers!

Dear Marc,
I bought your book "Best grades with the least amount of effort" one year ago and it helped me a lot. I decided to reread it today to plan my year and improve my organisation and something amazing happened, it was as if it was new book.

I realized that a lot of my mentor's principles were written in your book. And I began to grasp why he said that we have to learn from the best and only the best and that we have to be coachable. Maybe he is your mentor too, because you use the same phraseology.

Have a great day

Hi Marc, thanks for sharing! Very insightful.

Some 'conversations' are simply not worth having...spread 'happy truths' instead.

That's because 'as information is passed around, important qualifiers are lost.'

A great insight into the dynamics of 'word of mouth' - why not to make it work in your favour.

This is so true. As Engineers who design new Electronics Products for Australian Electronics Manufacturers, we see the benefit side of it, but I can also see that many of our customers are primarily looking at cost.

The benefit is simple, yet it isn't. If the business plan is solid and the market really is there, and they sell it effectively; then for every $ a client spends on R&D they wuill make back at least $10 in profit on the back end.

But there are a few caveats in there because we can't guarantee that they do at their end.

What we do at our end is recognised with 3 national awards over the past 2 years as being as good as it gets in Australia as far as providing both best in class Electronics Design and best in class Embedded Software development.

It is the start of the downfall of the business. I have seen it that many times were the Father builds the business and makes success out of it then sends the kids to uni for degrees and then when he passes the young ones destroy it because they don't know how to follow the hardships the Father experienced.

I agree with Peter. HOUSE is an excellent example of a mastermind group. In one episode he even was prepared to keep on someone who wasn't of the same intellectual calibre because they helped get him to a solution to the problem and no-one else did. It wasn't about raw intellect but the group process.

I have worked on some excellent product development teams that functioned as a master mind group. This is especially true of software development where there are so many technically feasible ways to solve the same problem, that the choice of method and tools is often made on other grounds.

One thing I have always found useful is to have a representative from production on every hardware development team. This shortcuts rework, saves a huge amount in time and also makes it more likely you will be able to hit the production cost target.

The cost of adjusting a drawing or design document near the end of a project is 100 times what it is at the start. If nothing else, it all has to be at least partially retested.

That is a pretty interesting set of numbers. As a company focussing on Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development we usually focus on the technology side of everything we do. But these numbers clearly show that we have to also be aware of how our customers feel about what we are doing for them.

So it isn't enough to really care, they have to know you really care.

So next time I'm designing a new Printed Circuit Board or write some Embedded C and communicating with the client about the technical details, I'll also be thinking about whether they know we are looking after them and care about the outcome for them and not just the technology.

Unfortunately a lot of people are unaware of the quick spread of information on Facebook- once it has been posted, it's out there for the whole world to see! This will be a very damaging blow to the restaurant.

In food business, presentation really is the very basic thing to use for marketing. Good photos will really attract customers and give them the curiosity to check your food out.

Who will come in to check in your food if that type of image is being presented? My suggestion is, if you can't afford to hire some professional to take the picture, you can do it yourself by just being creative and make sure the product you are selling is also presentable and appealing.

I used to work on a coffee shop where my boss asked me to take a picture for our new promo, so what I did was did my best latte art and took as many pictures with different angles and fortunately they liked it and after posting those shots in the shop, it shows how effective that strategy was.

Perhaps they need some training as this plate looks like what is returned to the kitchen when the customer doesn't finish their meal....though by the looks of it, I wouldn't eat it either.

Nothing some kitchen training from the Gourmet Guardian wouldn't fix. You see good for can look great and be safe at the same time. Some people just need some help.

Every now and then people's intelligence amazes me - this is one of them. Who in their right mind with a food business would put this up to advertise for more people to dine in there restaurant?!?!?!

One of the most common reasons why businesses fail is because they refuse to grow and stop growing.
