6 Quick Tips To Write Emails More Effectively

Do you have a tendency to put things off for later? Things like starting an exercise program, staying in touch with friends and family or even updating your blog?

Long Tail Marketing Delivers Higher Click Through Rates

I’ve blogged about long tail niche marketing before with a YouTube video that has become a classic amongst the exponential marketing community. Just click on the hyperlink to view it.

Even though as a small business, Internet advertising is not something you’re probably engaged in, a recent report by CONTEXTWEB reveals something that I have known all along, albeit anecdotally -

Average click-through rates (CTRs) for ads placed
on long-tail websites are 24% higher than
those placed on short-tail sites.

Long tail versus short tail marketing refers to specialised niches versus broad mass markets respectively. What’s of particular interest is that the MORE specialised and targeted you are with your web strategies, the greater the returns you’ll produce.

Our clients have known this for years – often out-performing their much larger, national competitors with very deep pockets.

Long tail websites—the millions of smaller websites with niche audiences—offer significant ad performance advantages across a wide number of verticals.

Among all 20 categories studied, long tail ads registered increased CTRs over short-tail ads, led by alcohol beverages (50%), B2B (48%) and charities (48%). The lowest long-tail lift observed was for auto advertisers, but still had (12%) better CTRs.

The trade off remains between quantity and quality of the communication. This is something we cover in depth in our Killer Kopywriting Konversations™ workshops as we help our clients design Killer Kampaigns That Konvert Klients™.

As shown below, among 21 publisher categories, 16 categories registered increased CTRs on long tail sites whereas in five content categories, ads on short tail sites underperformed long tail ads.

Data Source: CONTEXTWEB‘s Intelligence Report: Using Long Tail Sites to Optimize Media Spend was published in March 2011. It analysed digital media performance from roughly 18,000 publisher sites across 1,000 campaigns in the second half of 2010.

Conversion Clinic: Tip #2 How To Write Copy That People Will Read

In a previous Conversion Clinic blog post, I introduced the concept of how to tell stories with a funny video. Today, I want to address some more copywriting tips that help you convert visitors into paying clients.

Conversion Clinic Tip #1: Feed your reader with bite-size chunks

That means use: Short words. Short sentences. Short paragraphs.

Short words

Short words are anchored in childhood, before our intellectual development takes place. So they speak directly to our emotions. George Bush knew this well – speaking to the lowest common denominator of society with unparalleled success – Democrat John Kerry at the other end of the spectrum spoke with such sophisticated language that even seasoned political pundits needed a thesaurus to decipher his cryptic messages!

In his book, Words that Work, Frank Luntz explains this with exceptional humour and revealing honesty – in fact it’s one of my ‘must read’ books on my Linked In Reading List for anyone writing copy.

Of course being exponential, you might want to come up with words like antimimeticisomorphism, but that’s a discussion for another day!

Short sentences

A sentence is like a puzzle. It must be decoded by the reader. Aren’t long sentences more difficult to decode than short ones?

Sure. The long ones require you to think just to figure them out. They add needless overhead, narrowing the mental bandwidth available for your sales message. And they run counter to the pleasure principle, because thinking for most people, hurts.

Read this next long sentence and you’ll see what I mean …

Do you see how much more involving and pleasurable it is reading short sentences?

Of course being Exponential, you actually might want to have long sentences, such as this one… (Take a deep breath!)

Short Paragraphs

Now paragraphs are another thing altogether. Each paragraph is a decision point. Your reader is asking himself, “Do I really want to tackle this one?” “Do I want to keep reading?”

How does he or she decide?

By the look of it of course …

Short paragraphs are inviting. They hold out the promise of instant gratification. Long ones are intimidating. They look like work. And who wants more work?

It’s human nature not to want to start something we may not want to finish. The same goes for paragraphs. It’s also human nature to want to remain consistent with our commitments. We don’t want to stop something we started. The same goes for paragraphs.

Of course you can throw that out the window and great MASSIVE paragraphs just to be antimimeticisomorphic, but the point is to do that as the EXCEPTION, not the rule.

So there you have it – the long and short of it.

Don’t mention a metaphor when you use one – that’s a copywriting sin. That’s like telling a punchline BEFORE the joke, it RUINS it. Instead start with and continue using the metaphor that YOU know is the thread of your message or your story to get the message across.

That’s it for today – sometimes the simplest, most straight forward distinction is the most powerful – don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Todays’ blog post is another copywriting mistake you want to avoid – making these headlines TOO complicated – stick to the BASICS – the headline is all about getting the reader to start reading the copy. For some reason, many people think they have to be long – they don’t – they have to be to the POINT.

The POINT is to create enough intrigue and interest for the reader  to want to keep reading – THAT’S IT, THAT’S ALL.

SEO Tip, Fluff Your Pillows, Not Your Words

This is one of my pet peeves, along with the misuse of apostrophes. Fluff your pillows all you want, but stop fluffing your words. You are losing priceless SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) value AND losing countless suspects and prospects that would otherwise jump into your boat. Get prospects to convert into paying clients with better articulation and choice of words.

Fewer e-mails are being opened

It’s a fact.

E-mail opens and clicks have been falling, as fewer consumers worldwide are opening marketing e-mails, according to a November 2008 study.

The study conducted by MailerMailer found that the average marketing e-mail open rate fell to 13.20% in the first half of 2008, compared with 16.11% in the first half of 2007. Click rates also fell, from 3.18% in the first half of 2007 to 2.73% in the first half of this year.

Interestingly, some industries had higher open rates for their marketing e-mail, with banking/finance, religious/spiritual, government and telecommunications having more success than other verticals.

Convert MORE VISITORS to BUYERS

I hear it all the time…

Even if I get people to my website, I can’t seem to get them to buy my product…

Even though there are several possible reasons for this, the #1 mistake people make is forgetting that visitors need to be INFORMED and EDUCATED to buy.

Let me give you an example.

I am a competitive squash player and one of the things I am focused on in preparation for the World Championships next month is RECOVERY. At 45 years of age, recovery is EVERYTHING.

If you can’t recover quickly enough, you’re stuffed for the next match and you’ve lost before even getting on the court. Of course if you can recover better and faster than your opponent, then you could WIN before even tying your shoelaces!

Interesting isn’t it?

So for an elite athlete, the motivation is RECOVERY and if you SPECIFICALLY SPEAK to that benefit and value, you’re going to convert more people.

Former Olympian Paulo Frietag explains “When you exercise strenuously, you get into an acidic state where lactic acid builds up in your bloodstream. That lactic acid build up gets deposited in your muscles hampering recovery and reducing your potential for performance following the original exercise (or competition). With that in mind, an ALKALINE diet and/or supplement will reduce lactic acid build up DURING as well as FOLLOWING the exercise so that recovery is quickened and performance enhanced.”

You know lactic acid build up – it’s that sore feeling in your muscles the day after or the day after the day after you’ve been to the gym or played a sport. It’s a tightness and soreness that mentally reduces your endurance and enthusiasm to play full-on. For many, it’s enough discomfort to prevent them from going back to the gym or picking a racquet for days or weeks!

An Olympian should know what works and what doesn’t. I can tell you without a doubt that increasing alkalinity (reducing acidity) makes a BIG difference. In my training for the World Championships, I have DOUBLED my training time, doing drills and playing for 2 hours/day instead of my regular 1 hour/day. If you’re wondering if this ‘story’ should be in your e-mail, blog or landing sales page, the answer is ‘yes’.

You can place it wherever you deem it most valuable – sometimes you need to get people to ‘click through’ to the sales page, in other instances your click throughs TO the sales page are sufficient, but your CONVERSIONS are low.

You know best where the BOOST needs to come from.

To get the most people to convert, you need to have a specific approach and value-proposition that caters to their particular needs.

Testimonials are only as good as the RESULTS

As an Exponential Marketing Strategist, I am often asked if testimonials are as powerful as people claim they are.

The answer is both yes and no.

Yes if they include RESULTS and no if they don’t.

If someone gives you a testimonial like “Marc is a great guy, he’s charismatic and really knows his stuff”. That’s really nice, but has limited value and influence even though it makes you feel really good.
However, if someone tells you something like this…

“Besides … I would like you & Marc to share in my happiness with the outcome I achieved from the … seminar I held with … Bank and NSW Dept of … I got 5 new clients (value $80,000) and 8 prospects (value $100,000).”

This is a much more powerful testimonial. As you’ve noticed, I took out the confidential information – because this is a REAL TESTIMONIAL. Even when information needs to be removed, it stills has MASSIVE impact.

The key is to first solicit the testimonials and then actually USE THEM. Most people don’t use them – they sit idle in someone’s filing cabinet or in an e-mail folder, never seeing the light of day.

So there you have it. Another 1% improvement that you can easily make today.

Capitalise domain suffix and initial letter of each word in domain name = easier to read and remember! eg EasyLifeEbooks.com

Cut clutter from copy: use keywords and phrases (including derivatives) = improved SEO e.g. Discount car dealership, dealership, dealer.

Place link to your website in Wikipedia ensuring topic is related to your website = free traffic. No topic relation = removal for spamming.

So whaddaya think?
