Blogging For Business – Does it really work?

Don’t take my word for it. Read the email correspondence below from Malcolm Whitfield in response to a Post Program Planning (automated) email we send to all our clients after-the-fact.

Just thought I would reply to this.

I attended a half day Internet Business Blogging Workshop several years ago (2012).

I knew it was just a taster for further services, but I felt I got genuine value out of the few hours.

I implemented a couple of the ideas I got from the session, (there were more that I could have used, but I’m slack), plus what I have gleaned from the info on your website.

I got a feel for how the web thingy actually works. My tiny little website with its tiny little business pulls enough customers to outperform all my competition, including St. John’s, in my local area, and brings about as much work as I can handle by myself. (I’m 65 and not really wanting to hire staff and build a big business).

Your training session was tight and professional and jam-packed with real, usable tips and information. (I’m a trainer myself, and I’ve seen a lot of mediocre ones).

Don’t know how the people who do your mentoring programs (Platinum Program) and bootcamps go but if they get the same bang for the buck that I did, they should all be millionaires by now.

Just thought I’d let you know.

  • Classy people still exist in this day and age of entitlement. If ever you are working late dealing with a client request and wonder if it’s worthwhile – remember you change the world ONE person at a time. Not many will tell you, but many more than you think will appreciate it.
  • When you pay it forward, it all comes back to you. Malcolm and I met at an event several years ago, but I still remember him even though I’ve spoken to thousands of people since then. Be INTERESTING and people will be INTERESTED in you and your story.
  • Give without the expectation of reciprocation. This is so much truer today than ever with “everything” being free and too many people taking things (and people) for granted. If you are well served and are provided with great value – let the person/company know. Praise and acknowledgment never, ever falls on deaf ears!

5 Tips for Launching Your Own Online Business

Start Online BusinessAs a subscriber or reader of this blog, you know that I am not a proponent of the Information Product Millionaire “get rich quick” approach to Internet Marketing.

That being said, the Internet remains the most exponential sales and marketing tool available for brick and mortar businesses who want to increase their offline and online sales.

Here are a few tips to launching the online part of your business, to complement what you are already doing offline.

1. Invest in Your Website & Branding

This is a crucial step, no matter how limited your start-up capital is. For an online venture, the website is the business so it needs to not only look good, but also function properly on any device your customers are using (computer, tablet or phone). It needs to have the ability to take payments and of course be search engine optimisated (SEO) and more. You can do it yourself with our Internet Sales Lead Generation Toolkit or consider contacting a full service agency like 4040 Creative to help you in the early stages and get you online with a strong brand and modern, fully functioning integrated website solution.

2. Seek Professional Advice

Even if you can’t afford to hire your own lawyers, accountants and other consultants when you’re starting up, you should at the very least tap into resources like Small Business Development Centres, your local Chamber of Commerce or similar organisations in your region. Passion and talent can take you a long way in business, but being great at what you do doesn’t always translate to being great at running a business and some professional input can save you from making costly mistakes.

We have been working with groups like these – In Corona, California and in Bankstown, NSW, Australia, to help their members grow their businesses.

3. Have A Business And Marketing Plan

You can easily find free templates for both of these online if you’re not sure where to start. The old “fail to plan, plan to fail” adage definitely applies to running an online business. Spend some time doing your planning and then use it as a working guide to operating and growing your online business.

4. Network

This can be done both online and off, and is crucial to help grow your business. Reach out to complimentary businesses with whom you may be able to form mutually beneficial affiliate relationships. Join groups and forums that can help connect you with other solo business owners and be seen where your potential customers are likely to be.

Be careful not to get caught up in the Social Notworking Vortex –
where countless hours are wasted…

Remember to focus on building the relationship in the initial stages rather than going in for the hard sell and consider what you can do for others BEFORE you focus on what they can do for you. Pay it forward as much as you can – selecting those partners who are worthy of such an investment.

5. Diversify Your Income Streams

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Even if you are doing really well on a particular platform – don’t rely on it always being your primary source of revenue. Things can change quickly, particularly when using a third party application that you ultimately have no control over.

Lead generation the easy way

Today’s blog post is special. I know you hear that a lot, but bear with me and determine for yourself if what I  reveal below is valuable, maybe even priceless for you.

In today’s world, we know you have to be online to get new leads and you have to have a preeminent presence NOT to lose the sales that are on their way to you. I know it sounds harsh, but if your website sucks, prospects are going to avoid you, simple as that. Prospects who were considering purchasing from you will now buy from your competitor.

That’s pretty obvious, but so is lead generation – but then again is it really?

The fundamental building block of online lead generation is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). The problem is how to do it EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY.

Effectiveness comes from doing the right things and efficiency from spending the least amount of time, effort and/or cost doing it.

Feeling like a hostage to your web design / IT supplier?

Web Design Services, Get Rid Of Your Web DesignerMany small business people treat one of their most precious assets as an afterthought, rather than as one of their most precious assets. It’s not inconceivable for a website to be worth $100,000+ when there is a legitimate brick and mortar business “behind it”.

Put differently, years ago, when you bought a Yellow Pages ad, you’d SPEND thousands of dollars with NO appreciation in the capital asset value of the phone book. With the Internet, every dollar spent on your website should increase its capital value. Think about it this way – if you were assess two identical businesses, one with a website and the other without one, which one would YOU buy?  Enough said.

Most small businesses don’t proactively deal with their website and/or web online presence for a long list of reasons including:

  • “I don’t get all this Interweb stuff”
  • “I don’t like Facebook and don’t understand why people waste so much time ‘talking’ to complete strangers”
  • “My son-in-law, nephew or neighbour seems to understand it and is not charging me much to handle my website…”
  • “Technology is changing too quickly, I can’t keep up.”
  • “I don’t get any web inquiries so it’s not worth worrying about.”
  • “My staff’s taking care of it, in fact, we all kinda pitch in to get stuff done.”*

Whatever your excuses, as a small business person, in this day and age you simply cannot hand over your online presence to just anyone anymore than you would give them the pin code to your bank card. I am totally serious.

I hope you’re wearing clean underwear*

If you don’t know how Google has changed the rules of online search and what it means to your online presence and sales – you’re about to get caught with your pants down.

If you’ve been happy with your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), you’re potentially in for a rude shock with Google’s new updates, enhancements and so-called ‘improvements’.

They can and will displace a lot of people who will be caught totally unaware “with their pants down”…

Conversion Clinic: Tip #1 Know how to tell stories

The YouTube video below tells this story humorously with exceptional visual details that only well-funded companies can afford, that being said, when you are able to tie-in a story into what I Kall Killer Konversations To Konvince Klients To pay Kash, then you’re on to something.

(Note: the alliteration with K is homage to Ka-Ching!, the soung the Kash Register makes when a sale is concluded. It’s a theme of what I Kall Killer Kopywriting, Killer Konversations and Killer Keywords that I teach in our copywriting workshops…)

Whenever you don’t have the visual, visceral story to tell – borrow someone else’s like I’ve done here and leverage THAT to make your point. You are giving FULL CREDIT to the source and increasing their brand awareness as in Europe’s Canal +.

Last week, I mentioned in my blog that you should leverage other people’s youTube videos. I’ve since realised that I should lead by example and show you what I mean by leveraging someone else’s video – in this instance it’s Paul Telling, T-E-L-L-I-N-G’s video.

This is BIG news – YouTube announced it has reached the 1 billion views/day. WOW! But what does that mean for you and your business? My videos and channel have been viewed by more than a quarter million people – because embedded videos don’t accumulate clicks anymore, it’s probably close to half a million views. I have more than 80 videos uploaded to YouTube, viewed by HUNDREDS of people a day.

How country specific domain names effect SEO and Google AdWords performance

Many people ask me what implications “domain name class” have on SEO and Pay Per Click (e.g. Google AdWords) rankings and results.

“Domain name class” is another word for “Top Level Domain”, or the extension on the end of your domain name (e.g. .com, .net, .com.au).  In particular, you should know the implications that country code top level domains (or ccTLD for short) can have on your search engine marketing efforts.

This is a very nice ‘traditional’ invitation, but it’s all about her – nothing about what she brings to the table. Unless she can answer two questions, there’s no meeting that will take place.

What’s in it for me and what’s in it for my clients/contacts?

If…

  • She lived in a 100% green house that actually put electricity back into the power grid and wanted to share that with us – “I’m there”. I’d love to learn more strategies to be environmentally conscious.
  • She was a former Olympic Athlete who is still competing, I would be interested to learn tips and tricks to extend my athletic career and improve performance.
  • She has a blog or website that is making money in a specific niche, I’m interested to sit down, have a chat and learn what she’s tested that has worked and not worked.

I have no idea if she is any of these things, but I’m not going to meet with her just because she’s in Sydney – it doesn’t work that way – not in my world.

Your time is valuable – if you give it away to anyone who asks for it, no wonder you’re stressed out and overwhelmed…

Without getting on my soap box about value of time, this is about how NOT to ask for an invitation to meet on Linked In, if you want to meet people who are WORTH MEETING.

Anyone who answers this request is doing it for social reasons – not business, to think otherwise is fooling yourself. It’s no different than all those ‘meet and greet’ cocktails, breakfasts and lunches – the TIME spent going, attending and returning rarely, if ever, justifies it – UNLESS the presentation on its own is that good.

Interesting, but those networking ideas are for another day. This request came to me and before I deleted it, I thought I should share it with you.
