So, you want to quit your job… Don’t make this common mistake

Quitting a job or starting a new business is part of the circle of ‘business’ life that is now well accepted and expected. The reasons include a faster-changing world, accelerating with new technologies, the desire to expand one’s reach beyond a single industry and/or role and of course life-cycle changes following a life-changing event such as a divorce/separation, birth of a child, loss of a loved one, etc.

Early in my career, I was disgruntled and a very wise colleague told me “never leave without knowing where you’re going“.. AND “the more you understand why you’re leaving, the better your choice (of new job, career, company) will be.”

That wisdom has stayed with me over the past decades as I saw myself create several reincarnations for myself – each one progressively better as my decision-making process improved.

In the first instance, I am not ashamed to admit – it took me almost a year to stop whinging (to myself) about what I didn’t like about my “job/boss/role/situation”.

I listened to motivational recordings (they were on cassette tapes back then) by Brian Tracy, Anthony Robbins and Jay Abraham, among dozens of others. It was a journey of self-exploration that led to starting my first company and setting me on my course towards my ultimate destiny.

Admittedly it is easier said than done, but there is a process you can follow:

  1. Identify all the things you LOVE about your job, boss, colleagues, clients, suppliers, industry, etc.
  2. Do the same for all the things you DON’T LIKE, that annoy you, are missing or you would like to have IN THIS JOB.
  3. Ask yourself the all-important question – WHY do you want to change jobs/careers?
    1. The more honest you are with yourself, the better. Remember – NO ONE will see your list!
    2. Sometimes the reasons are, you need a change because you can do the job with your eyes closed and you’re bored. If that’s the case, then you need to determine what is the NEXT challenge you need, desire, want for yourself… Or is it just a change, something “new” you’re looking for?
  4. If you were to apply for the IDEAL/PERFECT job/role what would it be?
    1. Be specific. Where would it be? Downtown, in a suburb? A view or next to nature?
    2. What would you be doing? Who would you report to? How much autonomy would you have?
  5. What would the IDEAL/PERFECT company be to work for?
    1. A small, entrepreneurial, a start-up?
    2. A large corporation with big budgets and lots of career choices and opportunities?
    3. Your own company so you can make all the decisions?
    4. How about going “solo” / freelance for a while? As you figure out what’s next?
  6. How long will you commit to this new venture, opportunity, role?
    1. This is important to know BEFORE you take the role, to be fair to your employer and for you to know how much you are willing to invest to get a return on that investment (career or industry changes come with some necessary extra time/effort investment). Will you need to take courses, read after-hours to catch up on stuff you don’t know? Will you need to acquire certifications or other accreditations?
  7. Last, but very important – WHO are you doing this for? Yourself, your family… You need clarity in respect of the forces at play, otherwise the incongruency will manifest itself at some point.

No one can or should be telling you what to do or not do. You need to follow your heart and accept that with the independence of choice, the onus/responsibility is on you to make the best decision possible.

I guarantee you that once you achieve clarity of intent – the Law Of Attraction will come to your assistance.

Once the mind can Conceive and Believe, it can Achieve… anything.

I wish you what your heart and mind desire so you can flourish to become the best version of you, you can be.

 

Unhappy Employees = Unprofitable Business

We understand the logic:

Unhappy employees = unproductive employees = an unprofitable business

The issue begins when we deal with employees as a GROUP – Employees only exist as individuals, just like you EXIST right now, reading this sentence. ONE person at a time is reading this sentence. Even though there might be several or even thousands doing it at the same time, each is doing it in-div-id-u-al-ly.

Too many managers and HR people forget this very important aspect.

This is a “problem” only solved at the personal level with greater initiative, motivation, enthusiasm, encouragement and accountability.

It is a BIG problem, no doubt about it. The first step, in my book, is to have each person on your team or organisation become “purpose driven”, which simply means having their reason for coming into the office aligned with their personal goals, dreams and ambitions. My “My Best Year Ever Program” is one of the first steps I recommend to all my clients, for their own personal planning, but more importantly for their staff to get focused and clear on what they want out of life and consequently their jobs and careers.

You are more committed to being sick than achieving your dream(s)

I bet you’re skeptical, even defiant this is not the case. Surely you want your dreams to come true more than you want to be sick…

Let me explain.

I know a lot of busy people. People who complain they don’t have any time to do anything, especially the things necessary for their dreams to come true. The investments in time, money and effort to create the lifestyle you dream about.

These same people keep telling me “If only I had more time, I could be successful… blah, blah, blah.”

Then they get sick. It might be for a day or a weekend. They lie in bed, recuperate and get back to work.

So they have TIME to get sick, but not enough time to CREATE THEIR DREAMS.

Has the penny dropped?

Here’s the thing most people don’t get. When you fall sick, you DON’T HAVE A CHOICE BUT TO REST AND RECOVER. Yet regardless of how busy you are – you do it.

That’s why you’re more committed to being sick than achieving your goals – you simply don’t make the time because it’s not a “MUST” for you.

Every successful person out there who reads this “gets it”. They make “success” their priority – not tasks and to do lists that are thrown upon them.

Give it some serious thought – your health depends on it!

A sales sin you MUST avoid

Liar Liar MovieSales sins are basic, fundamental things that can instantly kill a sale. Everything is going well and when a sin is committed, everything stops dead in its tracks. The worst part is, it’s preventable.

Yesterday, I was having a conversation with a client who had a qualified, experienced salesperson who committed one of the most common sales sins – believing a prospect’s lie. The salesperson was making appointment setting calls to have a consultant meet with them to present their products and services. The list was my client’s database, the same database he has been using for the past several years to maintain and grow his sales.

The sales approach, which we teach in our Killer Konversations and Killer Kampaigns workshop is to have a multi-touch approach.

In this instance, the first few touches were emails. Their CRM system not only tracks emails opened, but also tracks the specific web pages the prospect visited on their website. Salespeople refer to this as a warm prospect.

The salesperson called and the prospect claimed that her email on file had not been used in more than 7 years.

The salesperson believed the lie, and the sale was lost.*

The primary issue with sales is the need to remain “on message”. Distractions like this white lie or an outright full-blown lie is totally irrelevant to the sale. A competent, experienced salesperson knows this and just ignores it, accepting that it’s part of his/her job to get back “on message” and make the sale.

* Upon further analysis, the CRM system revealed the prospect in question had opened the email several times.

 

 

A new way to quit your job – send a video

You have to give this lady credit for doing this – it sure takes guts and it is funny if you’re not her boss…

I guess we all have days when we want to throw caution to the wind and just quit…

But then again, why let a job get out of hand this much in the first place?

While we’re talking about quitting using the Internet, why not try to find a new job in a nearby building?!?!?

A positive twist on negative thinking?

Positive thinking seems to be one of the hippest trends of modern management and popular ‘gurus’.  But a review of the empirical evidence, released a few months ago by the University of New South Wales, found those who think negatively actually have stronger memories, make better judgements, are not as gullible, are less selfish, and persevere longer at difficult tasks.*

These are hugely important findings because in many workplaces employees who are branded as ‘negative’ are immediately ostracised, considered too destructive and uncooperative to have on a team.  But what is now evident is that they really do have a valuable role to play in any organisation if given the opportunity to do so.

* Unless we’re talking about the toxic people whose clear aim is to cause mayhem by opposing and complaining and conniving and influencing others to join them on the dark side.  In those cases, treat them as a serious performance management issue.  That’s why it’s essential to distinguish between those who simply think negatively with those who work negatively.  The former are easy to coach; the latter not so much.

Obstructionists come in tow different ‘flavours’:

  • The mis-matcher, who will drive you and your colleagues crazy by disagreeing with everything you say hence the moniker mis-matcher. These are annoying people who can’t help themselves and I tell all my clients to fire them LAST WEEK!
  • Non-conformist, who just does not want to be placed in any box, group or team – BECAUSE – they just don’t want to. They are in fact in a box, labeled non-conformist, but even THAT label annoys them.

The challenge for you as a leader is to avoid the temptation to turn a negative thinker into a positive one.  You’re better served identifying the strengths they can bring to the team irrespective of their thinking style, and then incorporate those strengths in some way within their job.  In particular, negative thinkers can make a great contribution in these areas:

  • Matters of cognition:  This includes solving complicated problems, simplifying organisational complexity, and developing subject matter experts.
  • Matters of judgement:  This includes identifying flaws in strategic plans, providing input on the recruitment of new employees, and determining risk.
  • Matters of motivation:  This includes participating in long-term projects, keeping colleagues focused on the core issues, and questioning the status quo.
  • Matters of social behaviour:  This includes communicating critical information, anticipating the impact of change initiatives, and assessing the fairness of decisions.

Of course, positive thinkers can be just as successful at each of those areas.  It’s just that those inclined to think negatively have especially demonstrated those competencies in various academic studies.  Even then, that doesn’t imply that negative thinkers are better than positive ones or vice versa.  They each have advantages (and disadvantages) that brilliant leaders are able to maximise (or minimise).

What you’ll end up discovering is that when you stop seeing negative thinkers as an issue to be rectified and instead see them as a talent to be engaged, they begin to feel valued and acknowledged.  And as soon as that realisation sets in, they’ll eventually exhibit the positive traits that so many of their colleagues have long desired.

NOTE TO SMALL, ENTREPRENEURIAL BUSINESS OWNERS:

Do not hire negative, non-conformist or mis-matchers. Even though academic literature and team oriented literature supports to some degree diversity – as a SMALL business, with LIMITED budgets – you simply cannot afford ANY discordance with your vision and strategy. Of course I am not advocating you hire only yes men and women, what I am suggesting is you AVOID those that will be conflictual.

Get More Done By Working Less

This is a concept we covered in detail at our latest Exponential Extravaganza. Easier said than done, you have to have a time/life management system to make the concept a reality.

A recent article in Inc Magazine demanded you stop working more than 40 hours a week.

The article revealed that you may think you’re getting more accomplished by working longer hours. But the research shows you’re probably wrong.

There’s been a flurry of recent coverage praising Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, for leaving the office every day at 5:30 p.m. to be with her kids.  Apparently she’s been doing this for years, but only recently “came out of the closet,” as it were.

What’s insane is that Sandberg felt the need to hide the fact, since there’s a century of research establishing the undeniable fact that working more than 40 hours per week actually decreases productivity.

In the early 1900s, Ford Motor ran dozens of tests to discover the optimum work hours for worker productivity.  They discovered that the “sweet spot” is 40 hours a week–and that, while adding another 20 hours provides a minor increase in productivity, that increase only lasts for three to four weeks, and then turns negative.

Anyone who’s spent time in a corporate environment knows that what was true of factory workers a hundred years ago is true of office workers today.  People who put in a solid 40 hours a week get more done than those who regularly work 60 or more hours.

The key is to realise that unless your an hourly wage worker – you need to realise that you get paid according to PERFORMANCE – NOT EFFORT.

Europe’s Ban on 50-Hour Weeks

However, the facts don’t bear this out.  In six of the top 10 most competitive countries in the world (Sweden, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, and the United Kingdom), it’s illegal to demand more than a 48-hour work week.  You simply don’t see the 50-, 60-, and 70-hour work weeks that have become de rigeur in some parts of the U.S. business world.

If U.S. managers were smart, they’d end this “if you don’t come in on Saturday, don’t bother coming to work on Sunday” idiocy.  If you want employees (salaried or hourly) to get the most done–in the shortest amount of time and on a consistent basis–40 hours a week is just about right.

In other words, nobody should be apologizing for leaving at work at a reasonable hour like 5:30 p.m.  In fact, people should be apologizing if they’re working too long each week–because it’s probably making the team less effective overall.

EXPONENTIAL MINDSET THINKING TIP:

All of this is really “cute”, but if you don’t know HOW to make the most of your 40 hours, you’re scr_____.

You’ll stop working longer hours (to compensate for your inefficiency) and you’ll soon be shown the door.

But it depends… As I wrote in previous blog posts, Erotic Capital and the Beauty Premium are real, measurable variables that have been studied by academics to prove that it pays to look better!

What’s really fascinating about these concepts is how they show how nuances and details make all the difference. For example, one study showed that effects were determined by the type of glasses.

Rimless glasses make your face less distinctive, increase your perceived trustworthiness and do not decrease attractiveness:

In face perception, besides physiognomic changes, accessories like eyeglasses can influence facial appearance. According to a stereotype, people who wear glasses are more intelligent, but less attractive. In a series of four experiments, we showed how full-rim and rimless glasses, differing with respect to the amount of face they cover, affect face perception, recognition, distinctiveness, and the attribution of stereotypes. Eyeglasses generally directed observers’ gaze to the eye regions; rimless glasses made faces appear less distinctive and resulted in reduced distinctiveness in matching and in recognition tasks. Moreover, the stereotype was confirmed but depended on the kind of glasses—rimless glasses yielded an increase in perceived trustworthiness, but not a decrease in attractiveness. Thus, glasses affect how we perceive the faces of the people wearing them and, in accordance with an old stereotype, they can lower how attractive, but increase how intelligent and trustworthy people wearing them appear. These effects depend on the kind of glasses worn.
