Valuable Vocabulary Is Vital For Effective Leadership

It’s common for unilingual speakers to overestimate their native language skills.

Whereas multilingual speakers are usually acutely aware of their respective levels of proficiency in each of their languages.

This is partially the Dunning-Kruger Effect and ethnocentrism.

The quality of our communication as business leaders largely determines the level of success we can expect. That’s why improving language skills should be a top priority for anyone seeking greater influence and better business outcomes.

Interpretation 1: 

• A man walks into a room WITH 100 people, so 101 people WALK into a room with X people, so there are X + 101 people in the room.
• 40 people leave ( X + 101 – 40 = X + 61 people are now in the room.
• 10 people enter (X + 61 + 10 = X + 71) people are now in the room. 
• So there are NOW 71 MORE people than there were BEFORE the 101 people walked in.

Interpretation 2: 

• A man walks into a room that has 100 people, so now there are 101 people in the room.
• 40 people leave ( 101 – 40 = 61) so there are now 61 people in the room.
• 10 people enter (61 + 10 = 71) so there are now a total of 71 people in the room. 

Same statement, TWO VALID interpretations.

This is what happens when you are AMBIGUOUS in your directives with staff or suppliers…

Interpretation 1: 

Divide 500 by half (1/2) = 1000.

Plus 50 = 1050

Interpretation 2:

Divide 500 by half (250) = 2

Plus 50 = 52.
